While there she wanted to explore the roots of her native island. Though she was not a landscape painter, she began to paint landscapes. She painted "Wind and Tenderness" outdoors in the heat, with bugs and lizards visiting while she worked. The external conditions allowed her to transfer the beauty and intensity of the island.
